What is RAID?
RAID
(Redundant Array of Independent Disks) is a technique used to increase
the capabilities, performance and reliability of hard disk storage
devices. With
access to read and write data quickly and efficiently from the hard
disk, it also decreases the power consumption of the device.
A controller called RAID controller is used manage the read and write operations in accordance with the instruction cycles.
Types of RAID
RAID technology is implemented through software form and internal or external hardware form. Hardware RAID is expensive when compared to the software RAID.
Advantage of using RAID
Stripping - splitting the data and storing as different pieces in different disk locations and while all those pieces are retrieved effectively during read operations.
Note: storing as different locations doesn't mean that different copies are made. Thus like any other data, this too requires proper backup to avoid data loss.
