OSI Model
OSI Reference Model
OSI (Open Systems Interconnection) is a fundamental part of computer networking. The reference model defines the logic on which the computer network protocols works. The interconnection and interoperability between the devices used in networking is specified by the OSI reference model. It's mandatory for every networking professional to have a good knowledge on OSI reference model.
OSI model typically divided into seven layers. Each has its own purpose and functionality.
Seven Layers of OSI Model:
• Application Layer
• Presentation Layer
• Session Layer
• Transport Layer
• Network Layer
• Data Link Layer
• Physical Layer
The upper layers such as application, presentation and session layers are meant for performing application-specific functions.
Key Functions:
Data Formatting
Encryption
Connection Management
The lower layers such as network, data link and physical layers performs network specific functions.
Key Functions:
Routing
Addressing
Flow Control
Labels
Internet
