Building Ethernet LAN and connecting to internet

This blog teaches to build a Local Area Network and enable internet connectivity to the LAN.

The following are the simple steps to be followed: (This tutorial assumes that you've a basic knowledge on computers and hardware components)
1. Use straight through patch cables to connect the computers with the Ethernet switch (networking device).

2. Connect the Ethernet switch to the internet switch using a cross-over cable. (make sure the internet switch has internet connectivity)

3. Assign dynamic IP address,

(a) Right click on desktop screen on your computer > click My network places > choose Properties.

(b) Right click on LAN (Local Area Connection) and choose Properties.

(c) Properties dialog menu appears on the screen. Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) from the list of checked options and click on properties.

(d) Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) properties dialog appears. To obtain dynamic IP address, you've to enable the radio button with "Obtain an IP address automatically" option > click OK.

(e) Click OK to close the LAN properties dialog menu.

4. In this step, you need to check the dynamic address obtain for the computer. To do this, Open command prompt > type ipconfig. Note down the ip address of all the computers connected to internet using this step.

5. To check the connectivity of the LAN, type ping command in the command prompt followed by the IP address of any other computer connected to LAN.

6. To check the internet connectivity, type ping in the command prompt followed by any website domain name.

7. Finally you've to do the loopback testing. Type ping 127.0.0.1 in the command prompt. (127.0.0.1 is reserved for performing the loopback testing in the TCP/IP protocol).
If the ping command is successful, then the job is done...
